Storage Unit Move-Out Fees: Prorated Rent & Final Bills

Emptying the unit does not always end the bill. Plan around the due date, required notice and checkout process so you know what the final month will cost.

Do storage units refund unused days?

Do not assume the last month is charged by the day. A monthly rental can leave the full month's rent payable even if you empty the unit near the start of the billing period. Confirm the final billing date before arranging the van.

Public Storage says moving out on or after the rent due date results in a full month's charge. U-Haul's move-out guide also says rent is not prorated. These are provider policies, not a rule for every storage business.

One day can change the final bill

FeeHQ illustration: a due date on the 15th

Suppose rent is $120, the next payment is due November 15, and the agreement charges a full month once that billing date arrives. Completing move-out on November 14 could avoid that next $120 charge. Leaving on November 16 could trigger it even though you used only a small part of the new period. This example assumes all notice and checkout requirements have been met.

The important date may be your rental anniversary rather than the first of the calendar month. Write down both the notice deadline and the last day you can complete checkout without another rent charge.

What other move-out charges should you check?

Questions for the final bill
Possible costWhat to ask
Another rental periodWhat exact date and time must checkout be complete?
Cleaning or disposalWhat condition must the unit be left in?
Lost-key or lock workWhat happens if you cannot remove the lock yourself?
Unpaid balanceAre any rent, late or other charges still outstanding?
Coverage paymentDoes the policy end automatically or need a separate cancellation?

An empty unit is not the whole checkout process

U-Haul's guide tells renters to clear and clean the space, remove the lock and complete its move-out process. Use the instructions from your own facility. Ask for a written confirmation identifying the unit and date the rental ended. Save photos of the empty unit with that confirmation.

If the office will be closed on moving day, arrange the handover beforehand. A last-minute move is harder to document when nobody can inspect the unit or answer a billing question.

If another month's rent appears

Compare the charge with your due date, notice and checkout confirmation. Ask the facility which requirement it believes was missed. Send copies of the relevant records and request a corrected final statement if the charge is inconsistent with the agreement. Stopping automatic payment by itself does not establish that the rental has ended.
