A CLEARER STARTING POINT

Travel
costs, explained.

Understand the extras behind a hotel stay or rental car. Compare daily fees, card holds, checkout charges and the terms that decide your final bill.

A clearer travel budget starts with three numbers.

Keep the price of the booking, optional extras and temporary card holds separate. The first two can become money spent. A hold can reduce your available balance while the hotel checks the final bill, even when you do not buy any extras.

For a hotel stay, start with the incidental hold guide. If your plans may change, compare leaving a day early with leaving later on checkout day. They are different requests with different possible charges.

For a road trip, add any second-driver charge to the car quote, then check how tolls and handling fees will be billed. For a flight, use our existing baggage-fee guide to price the bags you actually plan to bring.

These U.S. guides use named provider examples, original calculations and links to the underlying policies. They do not turn one hotel's rate or one state's rental terms into a national average. Each researched guide shows when its sources were checked.

KEEP YOUR COMPARISON CLEAR

A guide is a starting point.

Prices can vary by location, provider and the details of the service. Use the guide to plan your questions, then confirm current prices and what is included.
