Why can leaving a hotel early cost money?
An early-departure fee can apply when you shorten a stay after check-in. Leaving a day earlier does not automatically reduce the bill by one night's price. The booking may also lose a discount tied to staying a certain number of nights.
Marriott's early-departure guidance says the policy depends on the property and rate booked. It notes that a minimum-stay rate can change when a guest leaves early. Ask the front desk to calculate the revised total before deciding whether to keep or shorten the reservation.
Early departure, cancellation and late checkout
| Change | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Cancel before arriving | What is the cancellation deadline and penalty for my rate? |
| Leave before the booked departure date | Will unused nights be removed, and will the remaining rate or fees change? |
| Leave later on the scheduled checkout day | Is late checkout approved, until what time, and at what price? |
Checking out at 7 a.m. on your agreed departure date is different from cutting a four-night stay to three nights. Explain the date change clearly so the hotel quotes the right policy.
Calculate the saving after any penalty
FeeHQ illustration: saving less than one night
Imagine four nights at $180 each, or $720 before taxes. If the hotel agrees to remove the fourth night but applies a $75 early-departure fee, the new total is $540 + $75 = $615. The saving is $105. If the remaining nights are repriced, that saving changes again. These are hypothetical terms, not a Marriott rate or fee.
Ask for both totals in writing: keeping the original dates and departing early. Include taxes and any changes to package benefits. This is more useful than asking only, “What is the penalty?”
How to ask for a change or a waiver
Contact the property as soon as you know your plans have changed. Explain the requested date and ask whether it can change the reservation without a fee. For a prepaid or third-party booking, ask who has authority to approve the change and issue any refund. Keep a written confirmation; an informal conversation does not tell you how the final bill will be recorded.
Marriott also advises group travelers to review their group contract. A wedding, tournament or conference booking may have terms different from an ordinary retail reservation.
If your plans are uncertain before booking
Compare the cost of flexibility with the amount at risk. Ask separately about cancellation before arrival and shortening the stay after arrival. A flexible cancellation deadline does not, by itself, answer the second question. Keep a copy of the rate terms with the confirmation so you can refer to the version you accepted.
