Check local rules before using a deadline

An advance-notice deadline is different from the landlord's deposit-return deadline. Special termination rights, rent-regulated housing and local rules may change what applies. This checklist organizes your records; it does not calculate legal deadlines or guarantee a full refund.

For example, the New York Attorney General's guide explains inspection and deposit-return protections, while California's Attorney General explains allowed deductions and California's return deadline. Use the guidance for your own location.

Our move-out fee guide explains how to read the final bill. Planning the next rental? Use the move-in cost calculator and state apartment guides.
