How much does storage unit insurance add?
The price depends on the coverage offered and the amount of property you want insured. Treat it as a separate monthly cost when comparing units. A low rent can become less attractive if the required coverage is expensive or does not fit what you are storing.
As one published example, U-Haul's self-storage FAQ lists Safestor from $8.95 a month for $1,000 of coverage. That is a starting example, not a quote for every location or a recommendation that $1,000 is enough.
Do you have to buy the facility's insurance?
Ask two separate questions: whether the rental requires coverage, and whether it requires you to buy a particular plan. Public Storage requires insurance under its rental agreement and identifies Orange Door as one option. It also directs customers with existing coverage to check off-site storage with their insurer.
U-Haul's FAQ currently contains differing descriptions: one answer requires proof of coverage, while another says customers can self-insure. Confirm the rule for the specific facility in writing instead of assuming either statement applies to your reservation.
What to ask your existing insurer
The Connecticut consumer agency advises renters to check whether their homeowners or renters policy covers stored belongings. Ask your insurer these practical questions before declining another plan:
- Does this policy cover my property at the address of the storage facility?
- What is the limit for property away from home?
- What deductible would I pay on a covered claim?
- Are water damage, pests, theft and the particular items I plan to store covered or excluded?
- What proof can I give the facility, and when does the coverage start?
Do not assume two plans with the same dollar limit cover the same losses. Read the policy or certificate and ask the insurer about anything unclear.
Add the premium to the whole storage budget
FeeHQ calculation: six months of coverage
At the published $8.95 starting premium, six months would cost $53.70, assuming the price stayed unchanged. If your illustrative rent were $90 a month, rent plus that premium would total $593.70 over six months before other charges. The rent is hypothetical, and a different coverage amount can change the premium.
Make the coverage decision before move-in
List the belongings, take photos and keep purchase records where available. Estimate what it would cost to replace them, then check how the proposed policy values a loss. A small premium is not helpful if the policy excludes the item you care about most.
When you move out or change coverage, confirm the end date and any final premium. Keep continuous coverage for the period your agreement requires; do not cancel only because you have scheduled a moving truck.
